Lake Naivasha: Kenya’s Hidden Oasis - November 5th, 2024
1. Why is this place worth visiting?
Lake Naivasha, located in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, is one of the most stunning freshwater lakes. Known for its vibrant wildlife and unique plant species, it’s a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Visitors often spot hippos in the lake, giraffes browsing nearby trees, and hundreds of bird species, including pelicans, cormorants, and fish eagles, thanks to its varied ecosystem. The surrounding area offers picturesque views, with lush papyrus swamps and flower farms adding to the scenic beauty. Its proximity to other attractions, like Hell’s Gate National Park, makes Lake Naivasha a must-visit for a diverse travel experience in Kenya.

2. Local Activity and Dish
Activities: Lake Naivasha offers a variety of activities. Boat tours are a popular way to explore the lake and view the wildlife from the water. For a more immersive nature experience, guided walking safaris are available on Crescent Island, a sanctuary where visitors can walk among zebras, antelopes, and other herbivores. For those interested in geology and unique landscapes, Hell’s Gate National Park, located nearby, has dramatic cliffs, gorges, and hot springs that visitors can hike or bike through.
Dishes: Local food in the Naivasha area includes dishes influenced by Kenyan traditions, such as Nyama Choma (roast meat, typically goat or beef) served with Ugali (a cornmeal staple) and Sukuma Wiki (collard greens). Fresh fish from the lake, often grilled or fried, is a local delicacy that pairs well with local side dishes, like chapati and steamed vegetables. Many lodges around the lake offer farm-to-table meals, including fresh ingredients from nearby farms.

One hidden gem near Lake Naivasha is Crater Lake Game Sanctuary. Known for its emerald-green crater lake, this lesser-known spot provides a quieter, more secluded experience. The sanctuary is home to numerous bird species and wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, and colobus monkeys. Another less-visited spot is Elsamere, the former home of conservationist Joy Adamson, best known for her work with lions and for the book Born Free. Now a small museum and conservation center, it’s a great stop for those interested in wildlife conservation history.

Round-trip international flight prices to Nairobi vary based on location and season but typically range as follows:
From Europe: $600 - $1,200
